Preparing For a Successful Move | Big Easy's Moving
Moving can be a daunting task, that many people will only do once or twice in their lifetime, so we have provided a list of our best tips for helping make your move day as smooth, and stress free as possible.
Preparing for a successful move
Most people will only move a few times in their life, so we wanted to provide some pointers from the pros to help your move day go as smooth as possible, and to make sure your belongings arrive to your new home safe and sound!
Make a list - Just like Santa. Make your list and check it twice…or three or four times depending upon what you have to do. You should probably sit down with everyone in your household and decide upon a master to-do list. This includes your strategies for packing, contacting relevant service providers and determining whether you need professional movers. (In our humble opinion, you do!)
Have plenty of supplies - As soon as you know you’re going to move, start collecting boxes and other supplies, like heavy-duty tape, bubble wrap and room stickers like these. We suggest color coding each room with a different colored sticker. Example – pink is for kitchen, green for bathroom etc. You can choose your system so long as you have one. Collect a variety of different sized boxes that are comprised of heavy cardboard. You don’t want anything flimsy to carry your household goods. Make sure the boxes are sturdy.
Pack with efficiency - Pack items from the same room together in the same boxes. Place items securely in the box with the heaviest items on the bottom and the lightest on top. Make sure your boxes close well so you can secure them with heavy-duty packing tape. Try not to overload boxes – this makes them difficult to close and even more difficult to carry.
Pack as much as you can ahead of moving day - Anything you can pack before the big day will help moving day run more efficient. If it’s summer, pack your winter clothes up and vice versa. You can start packing up TVs a few days prior to the move as well assuming can get by with one or two in the house for a few days :) Same with stereos or radios and any other electronics. Make sure your cooking utensils and food items are down to the bare essentials. Trash cans can also be packed with items in them. Switch to using plastic grocery bags or just plain plastic trash bags that you hang on your door.
Use that luggage!! - Fill luggage and duffel bags with clothing, sheets, towels and paper goods even if you’re moving locally. It’s much easier to remember what’s in your luggage than another box especially if you are effectively labeling and keeping a list of what is packed and where.
Make sure your valuables are protected - When packing up the good stuff, wrap breakable items in bubble wrap or newspaper. You should only pack a few breakable items in a box and separate them with Styrofoam, cardboard or newspaper. This will prevent breakage during the move.
Set aside necessities - Don’t pack everything. Remember to set aside some items you’ll absolutely need when you arrive at your new home. Do you have medications? Put them in a secure location that you know you will remember. Toothbrushes and tooth paste will probably be needed as well as toiletries, wash cloths and towels. You’ll probably want a change of clothing and something to sleep in too.
